Gabapin is an anticonvulsant medication that operates by reducing abnormal brain activity and influencing certain nerves and chemicals linked to seizures and pain. It is commonly prescribed to manage and prevent seizures in individuals with epilepsy. In addition to its anticonvulsant effects, Gabapin is also utilized for treating restless leg syndrome, relieving postherpetic neuralgia (pain that follows a shingles outbreak), trigeminal neuralgia, and various other pain types.
Gabapin is typically prescribed following a precise dosing schedule. It should be taken at regular intervals throughout the day. Some patients may be instructed to take it three times daily. In such cases, your doctor will advise against allowing more than 12 hours to pass between doses, as this may increase the risk of seizures. It is not recommended to abruptly stop taking the medication due to the potential for exacerbating seizures or experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Generally, patients are advised by their prescribing physician to taper their dosage gradually when discontinuing treatment.
Side effects: ear pain, eye irritation, memory impairment, involuntary body shaking or eye movements, increased appetite or weight gain.
In some instances, patients taking Gabapin may experience rare but serious side effects. You should seek immediate medical help or consult your doctor if you observe an increase in seizure frequency, fever, flu-like symptoms, or any other severe reactions.
